Say hello to the ultimate Youtube rabbit hole.
Broadcasting has changed dramatically over the last decade. Gone are the days of congregating around a flickering TV with a dodgy aerial to be transported to the world on screen, now we watch what we like, when we like, how we like, all thanks to on demand and a little platform called Youtube.
We’re going to hit you with some facts: Youtube is the second most visited site behind Google, and with over 2 billion active users each month, with over a billion hours of footage being watched every single day!
Youtube genuinely has something for everyone – Into AMSR? Gotcha. Like watching people unbox things? I mean, who doesn’t?! Like watching old rallying videos that used to be on dusty old VHS tapes? Now we’re talking!
VHS Rallies: Youtube Channel
This is where the channel VHS Rallies comes in, a channel dedicated to preserving and sharing motorsport footage from the 80s. 90s and 2000s that were all destined for a car boot sale. Converting them to digital format lets the world enjoy them from the comfort of their home, on any device. With over 190 uploads, there’s plenty to choose from too, from the savage Group B era to the virtually unknown rallies, this channel has it all.
Take the 1983 Ulster Rally as an example – expect to see some of the biggest names in British rallying tackle a set of tricky stages, from Jimmy McRae to Malcolm Wilson, not to mention some of the best cars from the early 80s.
Skip to 6:00 to be greeted by the unmistakable turbo flutter of the Audi Quattro, which according to the commentator had been ‘detuned’ to meet regulations, but still charging hard for the win. The simplicity of these broadcasts make for easy viewing, before you know it you’ve left autoplay on and you’re 3-4 hours deep into the 1980 rally season, desperate to find out who took the title.
For fans, particularly those like myself who weren’t born around this era of motorsport but have a deep appreciation and intrigue, this transports us back in time perfectly. Rallying was at its peak during the 80s and 90s, and despite the interest and manufacturer input dwindling slightly over the last few years, these videos bring back the magic of the sport.
